The departements of Bouches-du-Rhône and Vaucluse, much appreciated by tourists, have almost a dozen 18-hole courses. Between Alpilles and Lubéron, discover the clubs of Pont-Royal, Grand Avignon, Sainte-Victoire and Marseille-La Salette.Provence is a region blessed by the gods. Bathed in sun throughout the year, this land has been celebrated across the centuries by innumerable artists. Marcel Pagnol told tales of Aubagne and the Garlaban massif, near Marseilles, Paul Cézanne immortalised the mountain of Sainte-Victoire, a few minutes from Aix, while Vincent Van Gogh painted his greatest masterpieces in the villages of the Alpilles, such as Saint-Rémy and Baux-de-Provence.

The region, with its cultural riches, also boasts some superb golf courses, where play is often accompanied by the breath of the Mistral and the song of the cicadas. The Marseille-La Salette and Allauch courses are located a few minutes from the famous city of Marseilles. These varied courses, requiring good technique, were opened at the end of the 1980s and offer splendid views over the Etoile range and the Garlaban massif.

Further north, the Aix-Marseille and Sainte-Victoire courses are very close to Aix-en-Provence. The former, created in 1935, is the oldest course in Bouches-du-Rhône. The latter, laid out in the midst of pines and scrubland, has views of the Château de l'Arc, the former home of the painter Bernard Buffet, and the majestic beauty of the mountain of Sainte-Victoire. A little further afield, north of Berre lake, the Miramas course has two distinct sections: one with rolling fairways, the other flatter but dotted with water obstacles. Thirty kilometres (nineteen miles) further north, the Pont-Royal course is situated on a vast plateau overlooking the Durance valley, in an enclosed 180-hectare (445-acre) estate. Designed by the Spanish champion Severiano Ballesteros, this circuit, with its wide fairways and undulating greens, should satisfy the most demanding players.

Further west, two courses nestle at the foot of the Alpilles. The Servanes 18-hole course, laid out between vines and olive trees, has recently been extended. Its clubhouse is an 18th-century former country home. The charming 9-hole course of Baux-de-Provence is also located in a magical setting, a few minutes from the Château des Baux, one of France's most popular attractions.

The departement of Vaucluse is not outshone by its neighbour. A few kilometres from the city of the popes and its famous bridge, sung about all over the world, the Grand Avignon course was born in 1990, facing Mount Ventoux. Generously supplied with water obstacles, this 18-hole course, its fairways bordered with cypress, poplar and willow, demands real precision. There are two other courses near Avignon. Châteaublanc is adorned with several lakes and little greens surrounded by bunkers. The Provence Country Club, designed by the former French number one Jean Garaialde, has a number of dog-legs lined with green oaks and Aleppo pines. An unmissable course.
